TREASURE – Demonstrating large pit thermal energy storages and improving their components, processes and procedures for an accelerated realisation of 100% sustainable district heating networks in Europe

The EU-funded TREASURE project accelerates the deployment of large pit thermal energy storage (PTES) to enable fully renewable district heating and industrial heating systems, essential for a decarbonized European energy system. It establishes multiple demonstrators all over Europe, optimizing cost-effectiveness, component performance, and construction processes to improve large-scale implementation.

By leveraging monitoring data from existing and new PTES installations, the project enhances simulations for future storage performance and system integration. TREASURE also engages market-oriented partners to address financing, permitting, and social acceptance challenges, ensuring smooth adoption across Europe.

The consortium includes component suppliers, construction firms, engineers, energy providers, and researchers, promoting collaboration across the entire value chain. Through its research, demonstrations, and stakeholder engagement, TREASURE actively promotes scalable, replicable solutions and knowledge dissemination to policymakers and industry leaders. The project’s long-term goal is to facilitate the installation of over 2,000 PTES systems, a critical step toward achieving Europe’s full energy decarbonization.

The project is in its early stages; deliverables and publications will be made available as the project progresses here.
